We choose the love we think we deserve ~The Perks

And I remember she wouldn’t wake up.
Her lips were mushed together in a
Horrible shade of red
They buried my mother in a white dress
And red lips.
And she couldn’t see.
Where are your glasses, Mommy?
And still at sixteen I bring them to my face
And peer through the distorted murky lenses
To see what she saw
Maybe one day …
And I remember it hitting me
Like it does every day
When I hear them all talk and complain about their
“Horrible” mothers
What’s it like to have a mother
I’d give anything to know,
Or at least for them to know how lucky they are.
They know.
And I remember she wouldn’t sit up
And I dreamed of a stuffing machine because
Someone whispered by my ear she was
Cut in half and stuffed
And it made no sense
And still at sixteen I wonder
What happened to my mother?
And I remember her faintly
She doesn’t even smile in my dreams anymore
And I wonder if she’ll ever be proud of me
If she’d ever approve of me
And who I’ve become
The things I’ve seen
The things I’ve done
And I remember her singing
Though I can’t hear her voice
The only happy Christmas I hold on to
Every year
Maybe one day it’ll come back
I used to think
Maybe one day she’d come back
And still at sixteen I hope
Maybe one day she’ll come back …
And I remember she wouldn’t wake up
Not even to say good-bye.

"I believe nothing can be justly and completely explained by words."

Please forgive my distasteful choice of words. I had no intention of creating a negative connatation, on the contrary, i meant to appraise you. I meant to acclaim your experience, your life as it has been lived so far, as the ultimate inspiration for expression. It is beautiful what you've done. And to further explain myself, i merely wished to wonder just how you would presently write should you of had the blessing of growing up with your mother all your life. I'm simply curious to know if you'd be just as talented (in this specific manner), if not more. Once again, please forgive me for my unintentional derision.

perhaps it is just me, but I fail to see exacly what you're trying to tell me. Are you trying to make me question what i do and love because you yourself fail to see why i wonder the things of my mother. As infants we do not learn what our parents will think of us when we are older... I consider myself a true writer yes. I can take critisism like this and turn it into a work of art. The ignorance of some is the bliss of others. thank you for your time =]

chrisbriones comment is ridiculous, writing isn't just about the story or message, its about the construction and the words, so ya thats kinda wrong o_0

No... I just reread that and realized how it comes across. Sorry, no pun intended. I didn't mean it like that!! It's a great poem, very well done.

Is it wrong to wonder that if you knew your mother since birth, would you still deserve the title of a true writer?

I don't cry, not at all, but the raw emotion in this poem got me to tear up. It is excellently written. Good job.

Im sorry about your mom...

I've dealt with alot of problems with both my mom and dad...but its moments like these that I wish I were a better person...especially to my parents.
