The sun beat down on her back
sweat dripped down her spine
Just a little longer
and her reprieve would come
This was her summer to get in shape
her chance to become someone new
To start over

She’d never been the pretty girl
She was never lusted over by boys
always viewed as someone insignificant
just another part of the background
Her best friend always getting all the attention
and all the boys
Now it was her turn

She isolated herself during the summer
Changed her name, her look
became someone unrecognizable from the old her
She went to parties and stayed out late
went to the pool in a bikini to show off
provoking whistles and cat calls from the guys
She was the girl that got hot over the summer

She lost who she was
The innocent little girl
who had never had a drink before
and who had never smoked a cigarette
or stolen from her mother’s medicine cabinet
She got her wish
to become someone new

This piece was inspired about me and friend who changed drastically over the summer of this year.
