Until his math teacher attacked, Percy lived a completely normal life. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan follows Percy as he discovers a secret about himself, a secret that may cost him his life.

Percy has encountered many strange things, but when he is expelled from his sixth school in six years, things really start to go downhill. Monsters are after Percy, forcing him to be rushed to a special camp in the middle of the night. This camp is Camp Half-Blood. Here information comes to Percy in heaps; they tell him he is the son of a Greek god, that all the stories are true. This results in some pretty cool water powers (hmm… I wonder why) and ADHD (because of his great battle reflexes and heightened senses) and Dyslexia (since his brain is hardwired to read Ancient Greek, not English). That isn’t even the worst of it; Percy is the number one suspect of stealing Zeus’ master lightning bolt. Monsters took his mother and are also coming for him, asking for the lightning bolt. The oracle gives him a riddle for his quest (although he’s 100% sure he didn’t steal the bolt) that must be completed by the summer solstice. If he doesn’t find the lightning bolt in time, the gods will fight, and there will be blood.

I absolutely adore this book; I’ve read it (the whole series actually) three times, maybe even a fourth by the I’m done writing this. The humor in this book is golden; Percy’s sassiness is the best and Riordan slips in great jokes and pushes characters into hilarious situations. The good things don’t stop there, the book is centered around Greek Mythology, which I find very interesting, though it may be a bit confusing at times (but rarely). You might want to know about Greek Mythology a little beforehand, although you will still enjoy this great book if you do not.

Overall this book is great. It is action-packed and boredom is a rare feeling amidst reading it. If I was to rate it I would give it 5 out of 5 stars for great plot, characters, the inclusion of Greek Mythology, everything you’d ever want! Read The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, you won’t regret it.
