Night Eternal
It was 3:56 am
when you finally hung up the phone.
And at 3:57 am
I allowed myself to break down,
to fall into a pit of desolation
because I knew that was the last time
I would ever hear your voice.
And at 4:03 am
while everyone in my house was sleeping
I was sobbing into my pillow
and I knew yours was soaked with tears too,
because even though both of us did,
neither of us wanted to say goodbye.
But at 4:09 am
my room fell silent
and I even stopped breathing for a moment
because I dialed your number
and after a second, you picked up.
You answered, but didn’t speak;
I didn’t speak either.
The static of our phones
ignited the night
but at 4:11 am
you hung up the phone again.
It was 4:57 am
and I realized that I had stopped crying
and a numb feeling took over
and I tried not to think of you,
but I did anyway.
At 5:10 am
I finally drifted off to sleep
between bouts of numbness and sorrow;
but even in my sleep I didn’t forget you.
You were in my dreams.
I woke up at 8:34 am
and forced myself out of bed
but you were still on my mind.
And that’s when I realized
that you would not be on my mind
just last night, or tonight, or tomorrow night,
but for the rest of nights to come.
You’ll be with me for an eternity.
