Love is Like an Old T-Shirt
Love is like an old t-shirt
The best kind is soft and warm and smells like laundry detergent
The lemon kind that your mother buys when her paycheck comes in
The t-shirt's your favorite color and fits you like your hand fits in his
It looks perfect with your older sister's floral skirts or your red checked pedal pushers
You lose the t-shirt and you find it again, you find it when you least expect to
And then it's all you want to wear and your other shirts hang alone and colorless
You wish you could wear it forever
Love is like an old t-shirt
The worst kind is coarse and cold and smells like cigarettes
The cheap kind that your mother smokes when her paycheck doesn't come in
It looks bland next to anything bright, you wear it with black jeans
You forget about the t-shirt but you stumble upon it again, right before you go to visit your mother
You stay home because now that you've found it, you need to wash it
Bit then you're left alone
And all you have is an old t-shirt

I was inspired by stories I've been hearing recently through my volunteer work about women who feel like they can't escape abusive relationships, like some of us can't escape our bad fashion choices.
