You walk with purpose
And your words are flung out with conviction.
The very air stands still and attentive when you have something to say.
That fortitude,
Though,
Was not naturally present at birth;
It was cultivated
And it isn’t because you think you are perfect.
Not even close.
You are sharp and severe with others,
Quick to point out faults in them
But swifter to find them in yourself
And hate yourself
For them.
You criticize,
Constructively,
Yet are floored by an offhand comment.
Not that you’d ever let a living creature know it.
Are you liked for your confidence?
Or
Are you confident because you are liked?
When did there stop being a difference?
Or
Was there ever?
You toss your head defiantly against conformity,
But in that, during this backward age,
You conform
To society’s expectation for any teenage girl.
A rebel without a cause.
What you should know is
Negativity
Is not a positive.
But you are relentlessly honest
While still somehow kind.
Congratulations.
I admire you
For acting
So strong,
Even when you feel
Like you aren’t,
That takes courage.
