Bridge
Pushed to the edge
of this cascading, unstable bridge
steel crushing, glass breaking,
almost the stress I’m used to taking.
Roaring white water swirls beneath
once a friend, but now a fear
I worked so hard to get us here
but to no avail.
My breath is rapid as I look around
waiting for just any sound
a cry, a scream, a siren or call
to reassure me I haven’t lost it all.
I dragged you here, I’m pulling you down
you never even had a choice
I spoke over your careful words
and ended up taking your voice.
The bridge was once called sturdy
I trusted its solid beams
but as I’m sure you’ve heard before
nothing’s as it seems.
So all that’s left is to hold on tight
and close my eyes for good
and wonder where I could be now
if I’d only understood.
