Patience
bright balloons against a clear sky
I count the steps in each cement block
my head is quiet
I forgot my brain
a silk ribbon twists around my toes
as I sit on the heater to warm
the house whispering softly to itself
a spider makes a web in my window
I watch it work
it's so patient
I wish I was patient
and I can't bring myself to wreck it
but now the flour is settled
there are clothes on the floor
and my needle is broken
I can't sew anymore
so I will write instead
while the rain washes the secrets from the house
and my violin case bangs against my legs
as I walk
the same bruise I always get
I drew you today
sculpted your face like a god
each line done over and aver
it still isn't right
