The Wealth of Stars
The shining eyes of Heaven
Gaze merrily at Me
I gaze in silence at them—
Gaze at them wonderingly
“O Sweet Stars, O Drops of Snow!
What’s it that makes you twinkle so?
Sparkling eyes, please do tell me
How you shimmer so merrily!
Sometimes the clouds obscure you;
You cannot protest.
Yet long as I live and do—
I am manifest.
I have a world to play in
I have much more than you!”
Is what I’m always saying
To the eyes in Endless Blue.
And they always say
In their calm and patient way
“When cometh the day,
We shall all, shall melt away—
We are beaten by the weather;
The sun doth torture us
But as long as we’re together
We’ll laugh and twinkle thus.”
And so up I gaze, longing,
Listening to the stars laugh—
For all I have, I’m wanting,
And for all they want, they have.
