In Love With My Next Chapter
Slowly strolling through the never ending campus,
A long way from my childhood home.
It's the middle of March, the beginning of
Spring, but it’s still beyond cold.
I feast my eyes on the enormous buildings in sight,
Everything is doused in beautiful red brick
And ice white windows.
The meticulously cut grass is emerald green, and
The tan concrete bridge that says Illinois State University
In white lettering stands before us.
As we approach the bridge that hovers above the
Two lane road, I gaze upon
The multi-story library on our left that
Dwarfs us.
It’s distinctive and intricate design catches my eye
In an instant.
With the wedged shaped student center behind us,
And the open green quad to our north,
I admire how the bright white sunshine bathes the
The gray concrete and crimson red brick
Around us.
That white light practically blinds me, but I can
Still see how incredible this newly discovered
Place really is.
We continue to stroll through this bright new world,
And shortly reach the center of the
Hand crafted overpass.
Students pass by us left and right, there is a
Pep in their step like I have never seen.
My pupils dilate as I gaze upon the twin Hewett-Manchester
Towers. They stand proudly in between
Two winding roads, forming an oval shape around their Worldly presence.
We spot an enormous bell that once stood atop the
First building on campus, watching as the times changed.
We enjoy the sight of a sanctuary of
Green trees, green grass, and even more
Red buildings that are vintage, but yet still kept to the Highest standard.
Thankful for now, when I can feel an indescribable
Sense of belonging.
When I feel at home in a place that is completely new to
Me.
We walk on the zig-zagging sidewalk, making our way
Towards the tallest building between Chicago and
St. Louis.
I admire the breathtaking view atop this gargantuan structure
And ponder the speed of time.
How it accelerates, how it warps as you grow older.
Following a delightful meal, I step outside with my family and take in my surroundings.
This concrete jungle is calling me home.

I wrote this piece after visiting Illinois State University for the first time, where I later ended up committing too. It displays the raw emotion I felt while touring the university, and gives a glimpse into what I was thinking that day.
