The House

There is a house that’s color matches the deep ocean. It stands out next to the cream and taupe colored houses. This building has a driveway lined with lush foliage that blooms in the spring with tiny sun-colored flowers. The driveway holds a black and red basketball hoop that has been weathered due to many uses in summer time. As the driveway gets closer to the house there are dingy concrete steps up to the side door. Bright pink and purple flowers in rectangular boxes are places on the steps due create a brightness that is lacking when the steps stand alone. Up the steps there is a door into the dwelling. This is the place where most people enter during the day.

The entrance has a shiny handle and a clear glass window that can be replaced with a wire screen when it get warmer outside. Through the door with the golden handle there is a kitchen which might seem outdated, but has been used many times for family gatherings. The kitchen has cabinets the color of chocolate, but counters the color of khaki pants. This kitchen includes a quartet of appliance dark like the sky at midnight. This place to cook is always stocked with food for homemade meals. There are linoleum floors which holds an amber color in most rooms in the lower part of the house.

More distant into the home there is a dining room open to the kitchen, where many different people have gathered. There is a birch wood table that is circular, but can expand to an oval shape when there are more people to seat. In the middle of the table there is a little napkin holder made by a child with a color that matches the table. The dining room opens up to the backyard through a sliding glass door with window panes that match the chocolate color of the cabinets. The backyard used to hold a green and grey swing set for younger children but is now empty because the children have grown older. Next to the door is a little dry sink that is run-down from years of use from older generations. The sink holds a collection of vibrant salt and pepper shakers, and elegant china given to a couple at their wedding.

Further into the residence there is a living room where the floor transitions into carpet that appears gray, but also has little colorful dots. The living room is filled with family heirlooms, and pictures are hung on the lemon colored walls. An assortment of Lladros given from a mother to her daughter take up space on the windowsill. A rustic coffee colored church pew stands along one wall of the room. Above it is an opening to the stairs that leads to the second floor of the residence. This opening is the place where many Christmas stocking and birthday pinatas have hung. The continuation of the carpet goes up the stairs and a simple banister has been placed along the wall.

On the second floor there are three bedrooms fit for a mom and dad, their son, and their daughter. The parent’s room is grand and the biggest of the three rooms. The room includes a television with a little seating area, and a substantial walk in closet fit for a king and queen. Across from this room is a boy’s room which always seems to be messy and unorganized with lego pieces and sports equipment dispersed across the carpet. Lastly, there is a girl’s room which is the opposite of the boy’s room. This room is oddly neat and clean. The room has matching furniture that’s color is as white as fresh snow in the winter. A selection of nail polish is attached on the wall by shelves exactly like the ones in a nail salon. This house is a place to relax after a hard day at school, or a place to hang out with friends. This is my home, a place where family belongs.
