Blockers

Blockers proves to be a comedic adventure that combines together drama and teenagers to form an adventure for the ages. The movie revolves around three high school seniors in Julie, Kayla, and Sam, who are all about to embark on the next chapters of their lives by going off to college. However, before they get to do such, they must first graduate high school and go to their prom night. In fact, all three have agreed to make this night one to memorable and doing something that will ensure that they will always have a bond to highlight their childhood friendship. Making sure that they will all follow through, they make a pact and plan to go through with one of prom night's most fabled traditions. Despite how this all seems to be going well, all three of their parents discover this and panic in response to what's about to happen this night. Understanding that it's important to stop their daughters, and willing to do whatever it takes to prevent them from what they think is a mistake, the parents decide to join their forces together. As the parents carry out such, both parents and children go on a chaotic, crazy and wild roller coaster ride that will be something they will definitely remember for the rest of their lives.

Blockers may be a comedy at its heart, but in reality, it actually has a fairly concise and cohesive story. The beginning of the movie does a brilliant job of setting the stage for later conflicts, and it also successfully makes the initial interactions with the characters come across as appealing and likable, causing these characters to be quite compelling. The middle of the movie does a marvelous job of progressing the plot along and adding new snippets of drama and action to make the movie that much more entertaining. The enticing ending of the movie does an excellent job of wrapping up the entire film, while also providing a conclusion that is sophisticated and successfully ties up all loose knots. While there aren't too many twists or turns in the movie, the surprises present still prove to be quite effective.

Blockers is genuinely hilarious, surprisingly dramatic and intense, and it unsurprisingly appeals to the awkward teenager within us all. The movie takes relatable characters and makes them the star of the show, unafraid to showcase them in all of their faults and weirdness. This helps to further allow the movie to stand out from other high school movies, mostly because the movie is breaking away from the standard and isn't just showing male leads having a great time. This time all of the leads are females, and the fact that they have their own individual quirks only helps to appeal to an even broader audience.

Blockers greatly benefits from a star-studded cast that oozes with talent and shines at every given moment. John Cena is spectacular as Mitchell, who is the parent of Kayla, and he brings plenty of emotion, passion and personality to the role to make his character stand out. Leslie Mann is magnificent as Lisa, who's Julie's mother, and she creates a character that is deeply flawed, making her one of the most complex in the entire movie. Ike Barinholtz shines with his portrayal of Hunter, the father of Sam, and as per usual, Barinholtz ensures that his character is filled to the brim with shear comedy. His character is genuinely funny, and he is nothing short of fantastic, serving as the glue to bring the whole movie together. While there are plenty of other notable roles, including Geraldine Viswanathan's Kayla and Gideon Aldon's Sam, the real heart and soul of the movie is the terrific trio that is formed by Cena, Mann and Barinholtz.

Blockers is a truly superb film that has just about it all, including a meaningful story, charismatic characters, and a profound plot that ensures that the movie is a good fit for just about anyone and everyone. There is a reason after all why Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie an impressive 83%, which is made even more notable by the fact that the movie is a comedy. This is, without a doubt, an absolute must-see. Its talented cast agrees.
