The Dark Lord of Derkholm by Diana Wynne Jones
The book the Dark lord of Derkholm is a book that follows the lives of Blade and Derk and the roles they play in the ending of the pilgrim parties. I was really interested in how Blade is a wizard with no training and how he was told by an oracle that someone would train him .”’He’s the one the White Oracle says is going to train me as a wizard,’ Blade explained’” (Jones 19). And I love how they progress very quickly into the story, but the fact that they really don’t give much background information on the pilgrim parties kind of spoils it for me. It is really easy to follow the story and what is happening even though it jumps from the point of view of mainly Blade and Derk but also the head of the university. From this book I learned that you can be a part of things going on and never even know. The book is a prime example of dictatorship in a community since there is someone forcing others to do something that no one wants to do but they are too scared to go against him publicly.”’They want an end to Mr. Chesney’s Pilgrim Parties’” (Jones 7). This book is a lot like other fantasy books that I have read since most of the time when I read a fantasy book with magic there is usually someone with a lot of power that is ruling over everyone and no one can stop him for they fear the repercussions if they fail. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy adventures and magic, but I would not recommend this book to those who can’t deal with POV(point of view) changes.
