“I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's
why.” In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, two men named Lennie and George travel across the country together, looking for work. Lennie has a mental disability, and so he causes some trouble when they finally get a job at a ranch. They meet new friends and enemies there, causing a difference in their life. The genre of the novel is realistic fiction, because of the events that occur are possible. I liked the book because of the deep plot and the descriptiveness of it. My opinion on the recommended reading age is about 12-14 because of its mild swearing and mild violence.

I highly recommend this classic because it was a page turner and it truly kept you on the edge. Personally, I did not connect to the characters because of the time period, the Great Depression, therefore how they acted and spoke was undoubtedly different than it is now. I enjoyed this style of writing because of its imagery and characterization, it helped you easily picture what the time was like. An example of Steinbeck’s amazing imagery is the first paragraph of the book, “ Few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool. On one side of the river the golden foothill slopes curve up to the strong and rocky Gabilan mountains, but on the valley side the water is lined with trees - willows fresh and green with every spring, carrying in their lower leaf junctures the debris of the winter's flooding; and sycamores with mottled, white, recumbent limbs and branches that arch over the pool. On the sandy bank under the trees the leaves lie deep and so crisp that a lizard makes a great skittering if he runs among them. Rabbits come out of the brush to sit on the sand in the evening, and the damp flats are covered with the night tracks of 'coons, and with the spread pads of dogs from the ranches, and with the split-wedge tracks of deer that come to drink in the dark.” I believe almost anyone could enjoy this book, because of how well written it is. Also, the plot was very believable, but it was not boring, It was believable because of the characterization, it made the book seem real. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes some action and amazing writing.
