“A house in the countryside with a yard and a garden and my pet rabbits.” Right George? Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck,  is a good book that I enjoyed a lot. An adventure book or even a mystery, it keeps you hooked, and wondering what's going to happen next. If the length of book scares you, this book is rather short, but jam packed full of good stuff. It has a great lesson at the end but you have to read ‘til the very last page to learn it. This is a book that I will remember forever and the message will always stick with me.

The book is about two brothers, not in blood, but in friendship. They go everywhere together. They run into some trouble in town, so they run away to find work on a ranch in the country. They are hard workers. George, the brains of the two, helps Lennie, the slower one, remember things. By slow, I mean mentally not all there. He struggles a little bit with memory and social skills. With George he is in good hands.

Both have this dream that they are going to make enough money to buy a place of there own so they don't have to work for anyone ever again. They are going to have pet rabbits for Lennie to play with; they are going to “live off the fatta the lan” as the author says it. They want to have their own place to grow hay and farm for themselves not for another man.

An example of theme is if you know someone who is suffering and you can help them do it. Help them get out of whatever trouble they're in. In the book there is an old dog that is suffering, in order to help the dog they had to put the dog out of its misery.

George and Lennie are country and they speak with a country accent. At the beginning it was a hard for me to read the slang words the author has put into this book. By the end of it, I was sad that it was over and I didn't want it to end. You find some humorous parts in this book as well. “Red, blue and green rabbits I want some,” said Lennie. I thought that quote was funny. There are many more funny quotes.

John Steinbeck is known for having lessons for his readers. He spent a lot of time working on farms and ranches in California where he grew up. Many schools banned Of Mice and Men because of vulgar language, so if that bothers you, you might not want to read this. I hope you can get over that and read this book because it is a great book and I would recommend this book to everyone.
