The Book Thief by Mark Zussak

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is about Nazi Germany. It isn’t like most books from that time period. It is a story about a young non jewish German girl named Liesel who loves to steal books.

This story does have a little twist. It is told from death’s perspective. You’ll get to read lots of foreshadowing that sometimes may or may not spoil parts of the book. Death likes to warn you, so you’re not surprised by anything. Overall Mark Zusak has wonderful taste in writing, but there is that drawback of the foreshadowing.

Liesel is a orphan and sent to live with a foster family Hans and Rosa Hubermann. They treat her fairly decent well, at least Hans does. He teaches her the alphabet then proceeds to teach her how to read and write. She makes a neighborhood friend named Rudy. Rudy is great kid and always means well. He sort of has a crush on Liesel. I mean the only thing worse than a boy who hates you is a boy who loves you. Which is true on many levels, but what is more important is the bond they share together which might get them into a little bit of trouble along the way.

Markus Zusak is a beautiful writer just when you think the story is about to get boring he adds a little twist to keep you intrigued. He paints a picture with how detailed he writing is. It may seem like a longer read, but it is most definitely worth it.
