A Tale Dark & Grimm, by Adam Gidwitz, is one of the best fantasy stories ever made. It is about the dark truth of fairy tales. It talks about the story of Hansel and Gretel, but it has a different twist. Instead of talking about all the good things about the story, it talks about all the dark and grim parts. One of the best parts of this story is it's amazing imagery. Another great thing about this book is that it doesn’t only have one point of view. It is told like a true fairy tale and has some parts where the author gives his own personal opinion.
First of all, I have never read a book like this one. Usually, fairy tales are supposed to be happy and nice, but this one is the complete opposite. One example of this was when a dragon attacks their kingdom and destroyed everything. Fairy tales are meant to be joyful, but as you can see this one wasn’t.
In addition, this story has the best imagery. In Gidwitz’s writing, the words come to life. An example of this is,”...and strode out of the large and wonderful wood. Trees towered above them like the pillars of heaven” (Gidwitz, 71). Gidwitz gives you so much detail in these two sentences and it is clear to us what he is trying to say.
Furthermore, what makes this story interesting is how it isn’t only written in one person’s point of view. The story is written from the children’s point of view, but then they are other paragraphs where the author gives his own opinion of the book. It makes the story humorous and more fun to read.
Lastly, this is a funny, dark, and interesting book to read. I would recommend it to everyone. It isn’t like any other fairy tale. It has astonishing imagery. And the author’s own point of view of the story makes it that much more interesting.
