Stories with an especially gripping plot are sure to capture my interest, this includes Victoria Laurie's best-selling book, “When”, previously titled “Death Date”, is the young adult mystery that surrounds a shy high school student named Maddie Flynn with the troubling powers to see people's death dates. Forced by her mother to use her powers to make extra money for the house, Maddie sees the quickly approaching death date of one client's son, but because her ability only allows her to see the when and not the how, she's unable to offer any more insight, leaving the client with more questions than answers. When the son goes missing on that same date, law enforcement turns on Maddie.  We see Maddie gets entangled in a homicide investigation, and more youths in her town disappear, and later found dead. A suspect for the investigation, a target for the murderer, and attracting the attentions of a mysterious admirer who could be connected to all this trouble, Maddie's whole existence is about to change.
In this book, we see three main characters that affect the plot greatly. The first one is Maddie since this story surrounds her. The second and third characters are the two lead homicide investigators, agent Fraday, and Wallace. These characters suspect Maddie of murder, and, therefore, impact the plot. The biggest plot lines are Maddie's struggle with her abilities. The book also focuses on finding the serial killer and Maddie trying to prove her innocence.
The story is from Maddie's point of view. We get to see Maddie’s fears, her anxieties and how the accusations of murder haunt her throughout the days. Throughout the story, the mood manages to stay suspenseful even in the light-hearted moments. You get to feel Laurie put you on edge when reading throughout this story.
Victoria Laurie manages to introduce the reader into a whole new world in this book. We get to see the hardships of Maddie's underprivileged life, and a realizable need to be normal. Reading throughout this book, you can clearly see how a teenager can stay interested and manage to see how Laurie makes a book for young adults.
This book truly showed me how entertaining books can be, and also left me wanting more at the end. This book may not be for everyone since Maddie is more of a relatable character for the “troublesome”  teen. Maddie proves to us that knowledge
