Legend
Have you ever read those books where is talks about the future, love and revenge? Marie Lu is the author of Legend and focuses on telling the story of two teens, named Day and June. Day is your typical character that helps his family and is poor. June is an ordinary character as well. She was born into a rich military family and has the best education.
The Republic cost of California where both Day and June live every year the government host a test to see who will enter the army to fight the Colonies. Their scores range from failing to passing. Day the most wanted criminal of the Republic and also holding the failing score heads into a Los Angeles Hospital. He goes into the Hospital hoping to obtain a cure for the plague that is threatening his family. While Day is escaping from the Hospital a great wave of events occur killing Metias Iparis.
June Iparis the Republic’s prodigy is on the hunt to capture the person that killed her brother Metias Iparis.Even though June was born into a wealthy family she poses as a girl from the slums to capture her brother's killer. June captures the killer and turns him into the Republic. Day is taken to be experimented and thought dead like all the others who had failed the test.In the chaos of all this happening, Day’s mother dies. Day and June meet and began to fall in love, but there's something holding them back from being together and that is Thomas a close friend to June and also one of her workers.
June and Day were similar throughout the whole novel. Marie Lu quotes that both June and Day have become so equal, “now that I’ve been in their heads for a long time, they've sort of become equal in my head”(Hypable). The intended audience for this novel would be teenagers or younger, because Legend is mostly about romance, revenge and adventure. Teen books are mostly all about that for example Divergent by Veronica Roth and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. For anyone that likes to read books about adventure and romance, this book is for them. Most of the theme of Legend was about revenge, because as soon as June found out that her brother had been killed she immediately thought of revenge. Also the theme of power stands out. The Republican of America has a great deal of power over the citizens.
The style in which the author chose to write this book was not different from the other teen novels it was cliché. The most memorable event would have to be Day’s mother getting killed. In the book it made it clear that he loved his mom and family. The story of both Day and June does not end there, Legend is one of the three books that Marie Lu has written. The story keeps going on with Prodigy and Champion.
