Wonder takes place in New York City, New York. The story happens present day. It is centered around ten year old August Pullman. August, or Auggie, was born with facial deformities. The author, R.J. Palacio, tells August's story through six characters' points of view. Her doing this make August's story that much more inspiring and entertaining. All six characters show how brave August has to be, for the world looks at him differently because of his appearance.
For the first time, August Pullman is going to public school. His entire life he has been sheltered from the world and home schooled. Now he is entering fifth grade at Beecher Prep Middle School. Not only does August have to face the problems and struggles of a middle school student, but he also has to face so many other challenges for being himself. With the help of his family and friends, Jack and Summer, August faces his classmates, and the world. They all face many challenges that prove their friendship an love. Julian, the school bully causes many problems and has most of the school go against August. It's rough and long year for August and his friends, that is for sure.
I really enjoyed Wonder. I think that Palacio did a wonderful job capturing the voices of six characters and bringing them to life! I think that you could really feel August come to life. I personally felt and understood his struggles and I felt him thrive throughout the book. I learned a lot from August and I was greatly inspired by how well he faced all the bullies in his school and in the world. I also found the plot very realistic and incredible. This book was absolutely phenomenal!
In conclusion, I think Palacio did a magnificent job in writing an inspiring realistic story. She beautifully brought six incredible characters to life. I recommend this book for everyone and anyone of all ages! It had some wonderful themes behind it that I think everyone should follow! The theme that stood out to me the most was "Don't judge a book by its cover!" This saying goes for people as well. Don't judge someone based on their appearance or on who they seem to be!
