A Child Called It; by Dave Pelzer
Dave Pelzer really wowed people with his first book already! This brand-new author really kicked off his career by recalling his horrific childhood growing up as an "it". His first book was incredibly suspenseful and intriguing. The way he recalled his young accounts near death made you feel as though you were him as the young child experiencing them.
Life for David Pelzer, until the age of four, was as any young child's life was. He had two caring and loving parents and had two brothers that he was close to. His life wasn't quite different than any other child's. Son, though, his "perfect life" took a dreadful crashing. His mother, Catherine Roerva, began drinking more and more which led to abusing more and more. David soon started having nightmares that he could no longer escape by waking up. David's father was also a drunk, whom David thought would always swoop in and save him. Soon though, his hero left him and the only person who could save him was himself. The beatings and the number of days he would go without food began to worsen quickly over time. David soon became nothing more than an unwanted slave to his whole family. With no one left to depend on, David learned that only he could save himself from his own home and own family.
The book was absolutely amazing! It showed how life can change for anyone in an instant and it showed how quickly a perfect life can change into your worst nightmare. It showed how one little boy, like millions of other children, live on a daily basis fighting to survive against atrocious odds. This book was truly like no other. It was an unforgettable read, that is truly an eye opener on how blessed we all forget we are. David's spirit and will to survive overcame remarkable odds. The first of many amazing books by this astounding author, that I encourage everyone to read.
I would give this book all five stars and an infinite number of hearts to this author. This story was such an amazing autobiography about an incredible child who went through unspeakable and unimaginable things.

As a book project in 8th grade, my teacher had us read one of a few other choices of books. She chose books about overcoming differences. At first, I honestly thought I'd hate this book. By about half way through I couldn't put the book down. It was amazing! I felt as if I was the young child experiencing and going through this abusive lifestyle. It's an unforgettable story that I found amazing and am so glad I read.
