Recently, I finished reading The Heir by Kiera Cass. The Heir is the fourth novel in The Selection Series. The first three novels in the series were narrated by a girl named America Singer, who fell in love with and married Maxon Schreave, future king of the dystopian country, Illéa. The Heir, in contrast to the novels that preceded it, was narrated by Eadlyn Schreave, the daughter of Maxon and America, who are now king and queen of Illéa. Eadlyn, like her father, must participate in a “Selection,” in which 35 young men are chosen to fight for her love. At first, Eadlyn is determined that she will not fall in love and will remain single after The Selection is over. As Eadlyn totters through the Selection process, she begins to have both a change of mind and heart.

The Heir did manage to surpass my expectations, but my expectations for the book were not very high. Kiera Cass seems to enjoy walking down a road of cliches in her writing, and there was only one moment in the entire story that genuinely shocked me. After finishing the novel, I predict that storyline of the next two books that follow The Heir will correlate greatly with the first three books in The Selection Series. I loved the first three books so much, but I fear that Cass will choose to recycle Maxon and America’s story. Any plotline that followed in these footsteps would be unoriginal, predictable, and boring, and I will be quite disappointed if I have to wait two years to reread a poorer version of what I’ve already read.

Compared to the other books in the series, I believe that The Heir is definitely the most disappointing in terms of content. I truly do hope that Cass will manage to pleasantly surprise me after the release of her next two books, but I won’t get my hopes up too high.
