Columbine by Dave Cullen
As a kid, I had always known about the Columbine shooting but I did not know what exactly happened and why it happened. I was always curious about it and this book helped answer many of my questions. Columbine by Dave Cullen is such a raw book, it brought me to tears and made me anxious. It is gripping and factual and I felt like I was at the scene of the tragedy when I read the book. I liked the way he described the shooting and how it was planned out and the aftermath. I like how Cullen wrote about each victim’s story and especially the chapters on Cassie Bernall which made me think and question. The author had a way of skipping back and forth between the shooting and before the shooting with Eric and Dylan that I disliked because I had to switch gears in my head to understand what I was reading. However, I liked the psychological profiles on Eric and Dylan that were included in the book which gave me insight on why they did what they did. Cullen does a great job of talking about the trauma that ensued and I liked that he confronted all the rumors that surfaced after the shooting. He is good at piecing together so much information into one book. Columbine made me go through stages of different emotions because it affected me a lot and I gained more knowledge on the event that occurred in my community. It aided me in understanding what had happened on April 20, 1999 and how everyone reacted to it. I think Columbine is one of the most intriguing books I have ever read.
