In this nonfiction piece by Dave Cullen titled, Columbine, it reveals the horrifying truths behind the shooting in 1999. Dave Cullen’s uses a factual type of writing while describing the shooting. This was welcoming because the author’s perspective or emotions are not received through his writing, instead he allows the reader to form their own ideas on the event. Rather than trying to show his sadness towards the event, him using this factual tone makes it easier to fully understand what happened and the events afterward. The many things all happening at once was a little hard to keep track of at times. This was both good and bad because on one hand it helped the reader visual the chaos of the tragedy and see how hard it must have been to keep track of everyone. But on the other hand it was hard to connect with any of the people because half of the time one person’s story becomes another’s. Then it becomes a puzzle of many different kids and then also their parents. Somehow Dave Cullen managed to make this horrible event impossible to put down. Throughout the entire book, feelings of sadness and disgust swelled but then the raw fascination with the element of why. Not understanding is what the author uses against the readers to make it impossible to put down. Columbine by Dave Cullen makes readers question their own sanity because while it is obviously not a pleasant subject it is a book that once started, will be finished.
