Victor Hugo, in his novel The hunch back of Notre Dame, Quasmodo, the hunchback, is voted the most ugly person in all of Paris. Quasmodo is unwanted by everyone. Quasmodo has never been loved by anyone in his life, nor has he ever loved another.
Later, Quasmodo has saved a woman known as La Esmerelda. He falls in love with her. Once La Esmerelda was with Quasmodo at his sanctuary she noticed the way he looked and he said "Ah! I frighten you, I see. I am ugly enough, God wot (Page 299)." She found it hard to even look at him, but surely enough she forms an uneasy friend ship with him.
Soon after being at the sanctuary some people come to "rescue" her from Quasmodo. Frollo, a man who is also in love with her, gives her a choice to either love him or be hanged. She chose to be hanged.
I loved reading The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo. My favorite character in this novel was Quasmodo. While constantly being hated for the way he looks, he still finds it in his heart to love another, for he too only wants to be loved. Although, I enjoyed this book as well as several other books by Victor Hugo, this book is hard to follow and is difficult to read. Still, I would highly recommend this book to students that want a challenge.
