In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque the primary theme and tone is of brotherhood through tragedy. This marvelous work of literature was first published Nov. 3, 1995.
Paul Baumer loses a close friend Kemmerich.  They are all tormented by loss some lose all hope while Paul gains understanding that all soldiers are brother that share a bond of pain and suffering. “A world of command has made these silent figures our enemies; a word of command might transform them into our friends.”( Pg 194). This shows how Paul has learned that even solider who fight against him are his brothers.
The idea of brotherhood and suffering reaches me on a deep level.  I was born into a family of political refuges escaping persecution. I have lived all my life in the U.S., but some of my family still lives in our native country. They have little rights as the government controls all aspects of life. I have seen the injustices when I have visited them and how all my brother of heritage are tormented and suffer together like true brothers.  This often remind me of the struggles of Paul Baumer and his countrymen.
This book is a great book I would say anyone should check it out. No matter your background it show how love is indifferent to all thing war, famine, and most of all hate. How love can triumph over all.  It also show our indifference to others suffering and our inner demons. That all men carry the burden of being able to choose love and forgiveness or hate and prejudice. That only we may decide our own fate,
