The Slayer Chronicle: First Kill, the spin-off series to The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod was published in September 20, 2011, is about a boy named Joss McMillan who joins and trains by an organization called the Slayer Society, a group of humans who hunt down vampires all around the world. At the beginning of the story, Joss, who was a ten to elven year old boy at the time, had witnessed a vampire feeding off of his six year old sister named Cecile. After the vampire had wiped Joss memory of the vampire appearance, his Uncle Abraham, during his sisters funeral, told Joss that the Slayer Society chose him to be a part of their group and in the summer before he started high school, his uncle’s slayer group, will begin to teach him about how to be a slayer and how to handle vampires.
In the summer camp, Joss meet with Abraham’s team, consisting of Sirus, Chazz, Ash, and many more, and Sirus daughter Kat. In order for Joss to begin his training as a vampire slayer, his uncle told joss that he had to be purified, as in to keep watch at a certain location with no food or sleep for at least three days, or to get whipped in the back for several hours. After Joss was purified, the story begins to show how Sirus, the slayer medic, and Abraham do not see eye to eye when it comes to how they should treat Joss; Sirus believe that Joss does not need to be over trained , while Abraham believe that Joss should understand about the hardship of being inside the Slayer Society. Secondly, Joss had to face certain conflicts with in the camp. One of the conflicts is to keep the Slayer Society a secret to Sirus daughter Kat, if anyone outside the Society found out about its existences; the slayers would have to kill the person. Another conflict joss has to face is that a group of vampire is planning to attack the camp by the end of summer and as well as one member in Abraham’s group is a traitor and framed Joss for two of the members murder.
What made me very interested about this book was one of Joss lines before beheading a few weaken vampires, “For you, Cecile.” Joss would kill a vampire to put his sister soul in peace, “a piece of his soul fluttered off” (Brewer). I feel that the same as Vladimir, Joss will not only face external conflict, but will face himself as a person. I recommend this book to any person who has or has not read The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod.
