James Agee, in his novel A Death in the Family, explores an unexpected incident. Jay is a husband, and parent of two kids; he is also a son of tremendous ill man; who was endanger of death.
When Jay receives a call from his brother Ralph, saying their father was very close to reach his last breath, he immediately goes out to meet his father. He had to leave late at night without having a chance to say goodbye to his kids. He had told his wife to tell the kids that he will return the next day before they’re asleep, “Tell them don’t promise them anything of course, but tell them I’m practically sure to be back before they’re asleep” ( Agee 35). Since Jay was rushing home to his wife and kids the next day late at night, he ended speeding very fast, and dying in an accident.
  I really enjoyed A Death in the Family. I especially liked how James Agee tricked me into thinking Jay’s father was going to pass away. My favorite part in this novel is when Aunt Hannah takes out Rufus (Jay’s son) to the mall, and buys him a cap. I really like this part because, Rufus was excited to show his dad, and it was really emotional. My least favorite part was when Mary (Jay’s wife) finds out about her husband’s death. This was my least favorite part not because I hated it, but because it was really emotional that it brought me to tears. I would definitely recommend this book to someone who is interested in mysterious and surprises.
