In A Lesson Before Dying written by Ernest Gaines, Jefferson, a young black boy, was accused of murder. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Jefferson was at a liquor store when two guys, that were drunk, tried buying alcohol but didn’t have enough money, so they tried to steal some from the cashier register. The cashier shot one of them to defend himself; the other guy shot the cashier and before he died he shot the man who shot him. Jefferson the only one alive at the crime scene was investigated. He was clueless to what had happen, therefore he was sentenced the death penalty for murder. Grant, a teacher, was told to “make a man out of Jefferson”. The god mother of Jefferson and aunt asked Grant to help; he did help. Throughout the whole story Grant helps Jefferson face his problems before he is killed. Grant has a very stress full journey trying to make a man of Jefferson. \
This book, which was published in 1993, was somewhat confusing in my opinion. I did not like how it would switch from one thing to something totally different during the story. If I could I would change the ending and add a twist, to make the book more interesting.
I personally would not recommend this book to anybody, because it’s mind-numbing. The story didn’t have much of a point. To be honest I don’t think anyone would enjoy this book, unless you’re into any type of books.
