What would you do if you only had a year left to live? Would you tell everyone you know or keep it a secret to all except you? In this inspiring book by Chris Crutcher the main character, Ben Wolf finds out he has a terminating disease and that he does not have much time left to live. He decides to keep it a secret and not get treatment because in his mind he knows that he was meant to die.
Chris Crutcher has written a total of 14 books so far. Mostly his books are meant for young adults but I believe that his books can be read at all ages. This book, Deadline, is a very clever novel that puts a twist on the common theme of young teens dying of illness. It is unlike any other book about this subject but is similar at the same time. There is a love interest for the main character Ben but they have a different kind of relationship and the book is not focused on this. It also shows his relationship with the town drunk and how he gets to know him with a surprising twist of events.
The book keeps you interested at all times and you will not want to put it down until you finish it. There is not much action in the book but there are so many things that keep you asking questions you will want to keep reading to find out. Will he tell people about his disease? What will happen between him and his crush? This is a book you will want to read to find out.
