Trouble River

The author is Betsy Byars and the genre is Historical Fiction. This takes place in 1800s, on an isolated prairie farm Dewey Martins, Grandma, and his Dog, Charlie. The plot is 12-year old Dewey Martins has been staying with his grandma by himself since his parents left for Hunter City to have a newborn baby. He is building something for himself and his dog, Charlie. It’s a log raft that can carry him down through “Trouble River”. This River has lots of Danger along the way if you travel to go down it. From Wolves to poisonous plants or animals. One night when he is about to finish the last part of the raft, He spots an Indian in the distance and starts to run back home. He awakes his Grandma and tells her what he saw. In panic, Dewey, Grandma, and Charlie head for the raft that he made and they travel down Trouble River.

I feel that this was a great book with adventure, with people that were in that generation. I got to know what it was like being my age but more than 200 years ago. It showed them not having all the food we do and living on a prairie. We don’t have any of those in Hawai?i. Having only a little amount of food. Weird types of food like eating raw potatoes. This book had actual Indians and their stories behind them was just shocking.
For readers that are just starting to read this book, you’re gonna love this book. Byars added in so much great factors that made this book perfect. Theres a lot of adventure, shows thing that don’t happen today.
