“Divergent” by Veronica Roth is a action-packed, page turning, Sci-Fi phenomenon, that will leave you wanting more. It’s a book like no other, and you’ll never be able to put it down. The hardships and challenges that the main character, Tris has to face, will let readers connect even more with the book.
Divergent is an epic beginning to a wonderful series. It takes place in Chicago, extremely far into the future. The society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to a different group— Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On a certain day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, not only her parents and her brother, Caleb, but most of all— herself. She them soon realizes that to survive, she must fight her way through initiation to become a permanent member of her faction.
When I first picked up this 500 page book, I didn’t know what to expect. The way everyone was explaining it seemed like I wouldn’t like it very much. But, as soon as I got through the first few chapters, my view of the book completely changed. I honestly loved the book and couldn’t wait to see how Veronica Roth was going to continue the series. The reason I found this book so likeable is because Veronica always seemed to keep the book going, with twists and turns or every page. That was one thing that really drew me in, and I believe it was one of the best things about this book. Once you start, you won’t be able to put the book down. This book also taught me many life lessons in ways no one else could. I learned to always listen to myself and my heart. Throughout the book, Tris always had a difficult time with this, especially during the choosing ceremony. I’m glad she picked what she wanted, because if she had gone with another faction, we can probably infer that she would’ve been upset with the decision she made. I think anyone should be reading this book because you will gain so much knowledge from it, I know I have. However, I would recommend this book to anyone who has the time for it. Divergent is quite lengthy, but definitely worth the time. Divergent is a book for everyone, with romance, action, suspense, and so much more.
