The book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is about Tally, a girl with her dreams set on becoming pretty when she turns 16. I think it’s a really good book because throughout the book, the character’s personalities kept changing, and there were lot’s of unexpected happenings. This fictional book is recommended to you if you like adventurous books. In the beginning, you get the idea that the book will be about a town full of uglies, what normal people are depicted to be, and people turning pretty, but soon, the plot goes in a whole new direction. The theme of the book is destruction of beauty. I think this theme fits because it’s about beauty causing bad things and making people pretty because they think the way you look when you are born is hideous, so they change the whole idea of your appearance.
This is definitely a book that hooks you from the beginning, but even though it has that hook, the book gets way better as you read through the text. I disagreed with most of the opinions at the beginning when it was talking about being ugly before surgery, but then I agreed with the rest of the opinions, about liking others for what this looks like from the start. The book suggests that once you get to know someone, they are always beautiful to you. The book left out certain parts about Special Circumstances and how they somehow look cruel but are really pretty. I agree with the author’s opinions kind of how I agreed with the author of Unwind, when parents decided to have their kids murdered. The book told me at the beginning that I need to look and be like everyone else, but towards the end, it talked about people looking perfect even though they were “uglies”. It’s only your inner appearance that matters.
Over all, I think the book was really well written and I’m excited to read the next. I still think they could have explained Special Circumstances more, but it’s okay, I’m sure they’ll probably tell me in the next books.
