The book Out Of My Mind is a phenomenal book. I found myself laughing, crying, and not being able to put it down. This book was written by Sharon M. Draper, and it falls under the realistic fiction category. The book was about something different and something not like the books I usually read. Hearing the thoughts of a little girl with cerebral palsy was very interesting. You grow up thinking these kids with special needs don’t understand you, but they do. They understand every word you say. They get frustrated because they can’t communicate back to you, and all they want to do is just talk to you. This book was written very well and one of the best books that I have ever read. It was also very upbeat and never a dull moment which kept the book interesting all the time.

Out Of My Mind is a story about Melody Brooks, who is eleven years old that has cerebral palsy. Melody is extremely smart, but doesn’t get treated that way. She can’t speak which automatically makes kids at her school think she’s stupid. She is always thrilled when she gets to sit in a class of regular kids because when she is being treated like everyone else, she doesn’t feel like baby. Melody eventually joins the schools quiz team which surprises everyone because they only see her for a girl with a disability. They get to go on a trip to compete in Washington D.C., but something terrible happens, which is where the book gets exciting. You get to live the life of a girl with cerebral palsy and feel what life was like for her.

Overall, this book was one that I couldn’t put down. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a really great, well written, fun read that will have you wanting to know more. It is slow in the beginning, however it picks up throughout. The theme of this book is that you can’t judge what’s on the outside of a person, as in their looks or if they have a disability. I think that anyone could read this book and enjoy it just as much as I did.
