Imagine being partnered with someone in an arena fighting for your life. Away from your family. Your district is depending on you. You are like the mother in your family and you would do anything to help them out. You are hated by several people because you have killed their family. You have to stay with Haymitch who is not the best role model for a teenage girl. Well this is exactly what happens to Katniss Everdeen in the book, Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins.

Katniss is a teenage girl who lives with her mother and sister, Prim, who is very close to Katniss. This is her second time entering the Hunger Games. She was picked in a raffle. She is in the Hunger Games with a volunteer named Peeta. The Hunger Games is an event where people try to kill the other tributes to win the food for their district. Every hour there is a different attack that happens in that zone of the battlefield. When a tribute dies they blast a cannon and a picture of the dead person goes into the sky so everyone knows who has died. These attacks include screaming monkeys, poisonous fog, deadly wasps, and other very dangerous things. Last year she won the games.

In this book Katniss Everdeen has to face some horrible events and sights that have the chance to kill her or terribly hurt her. Every hour there was a different scene that made her have less of a chance of surviving. President Snow on the other hand tries to do everything he can to stop her from winning the games. She does everything she can to win the games, for her, her family, and her district.

This is an intense book of mystery, excitement, and even sadness. This book is an amazing book because it has parts that are not expected. Tributes die unexpectedly and nobody knows when the cannon is going to blow. You also never know when a different hour is going to strike. A new battle could happen at any point in time and you always have to be ready. It just keeps you wanting to read more!

One of my favorite parts is when Mags, an older woman in the games, runs into the fog. She runs into the fog because the fog is poisonous and it will kill her. She thinks that she is slowing her partners down if she is alive so she kills herself so they can move on. This is one of my favorite parts because it was very surprising and I did not see it coming! It was very sweet of Mags when she takes one for the team and instead of slowing everyone down she kills herself. That made me smile because she sacrificed herself to help out others. I thought that was a nice thing to do. This is one of my favorite books I have ever read!

The characters in this book are what makes the book so fascinating. My favorite character is Katniss because she is so strong and brave. She goes through all of these struggles because she is a hard worker and she made friends. She did not just kill everyone, she made allies to help her out during the games. This book is part of a trilogy and it is the second book. It is a very fascinating book because it keeps you on the edge of your seat. It is very unpredictable which is one of the reasons this is such a great book. It is very action filled and suspenseful. The theme of the book is good people always end up with good things. I say this because Katniss is a good person for volunteering for her district and she won! It is a science-fiction novel and an amazing book! I would definitely recommend it to anyone 5th grade and up!
