What if I told you that every myth and legend that you have ever heard, are based on a seed of truth? Everything you held to be myth or fable actually had a real resembling counterpart. A forgotten world or rather a way of life that humanity has chosen to leave behind. This is the world that Josh and Sophie Newman now must indulge, seemingly normal twins until they came in contact with the mysterious and notorious Nicholas and Pernell Flamel. Suddenly there world changes and they are introduced to a world of magic, other races and immortals. This is the world embodied in Michael Scott's’ The Alchemyst Book One of The Secrets Of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel. Published by Delacorte Press in 2007 in New York.

Nicholas Flamel is the worlds most famous alchemist, he has faked his death a multitude of times in order to let history leave him behind, because him and his wife Perenelle Flamel are guardians of The Book of Abraham The Mage also known as the codex, and within it they have discovered the secret of immortality. Without the book and the potion of immortality they we age at an alarming rate. They are legend and soon they will bring Josh and Sophie Newman in on what history does not know. They must save the known world by stopping the elders or dark elders from returning, but theres a twist, ten thousand years ago a man named Abraham predicted the future and for saw both Josh and Sophie. He said that between the two twins there will be one to save the world and one to destroy it.

This book shows a place where everything exists and problems erupt. The world is in danger of being thrown out of balance and the human race being enslaved and eaten. The fate of many lives rest on the shoulders of few. The Alchemist is the first book the the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series. These books infuse fiction with fantasy telling real historical facts about characters as they are introduced into the plot.

The series and primarily this book focus on Nicholas Flamel and his wife Perenelle Flamel. These are both actual people that have existed throughout history. Nicholas Flamel and his wife Pernell lived through the 1300’s in to the 1400’s or at least that is how far time remembers them. His legend was credited with making the philosopher's stone, turning metal into gold and that he and his wife had achieved immortality with the elixir of life. In the book they are also credited with such things but instead of just being fables they are truth.

This book and the series is very good because it links history non-fiction in a fiction setting. It is a very well written book that ties many people throughout history with in a fictional setting that brings in other characters and brings actual people with myths and creatures from the authors imagination.

I would recommend this book to many readers. Especially to readers that enjoy a well written fiction book with actual historical characters and many fictional characters that exist in other written texts and religions. It is a very well written book as well as the series that it takes part in. I enjoyed this book and this series and I believe that others will have the same experience.
