Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie Book Review

In the mood for an inspirational teen novel instead of vampires and dystopian societies? Well then, give Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie a try! Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie, a fascinating and emotive novel published by Scholastic on January 1st 2004, was written by Jordan Sonnenblick, father of two children. Sonnenblick, born July 4th 1969 has always enjoyed reading and writing. To be expected, his favorite subject in school was English. He would write about his day in many forms of writing. One day it would be a poem. The next a song. The following day, a short story. Let’s just say he aspired to be an author in the future and write books for both adults and children.
Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie has a theme of “family comes first.” This book is about a teenage boy named Steven who’s life has flipped upside down ever since he joined the All-City Jazz Band for his high school as an 8th grader. The talented 13 year old drummer’s life is simply horrible! His crush doesn’t even know he exists, his band members call him “the peasant”, and his grades are drastically dropping. Could anything possibly get worse? Jeffery, his younger brother who practically annoys the living daylight out of him, suddenly gets diagnosed with a life- changing illness.
I couldn’t put this book down once I started reading it. I’m honestly not a big reader but I just had to read on and see what happened next! A Child Called It, written by Dave Pelzer, was a book I’ve read that has a similar plot to this one. Both main characters in the novels had family issues. Dave, the main character in A Child Called It, was physically abused by his mother. Dave and Steven both had to go through a family difficulty. Also, not only was Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie an interesting story, but it moved me to think of others first and made me realize how I should be grateful for what I have. This was the very first book that I’ve read of Jordan Sonnenblick’s, but most definitely not the last. If I had to rate this book from 1 to 5 stars, 5 being the best, I would give this book a 5! I would recommend young teenage readers who are interested in realistic fictional dramas to read this spectacular and intriguing novel.
Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick was the only true novel that I couldn’t put down. In other words, this book is truly great and I want other teenagers to read it too!
