Divergent Review

The teenage love story with an adventurous twist has become a very common one nowadays. In the New York Times bestseller, Divergent, by Veronica Roth, this common story is done quite well. Divergent was published by HarperCollins Inc. in 2012. Divergent is one of the best versions of the modern teenage love story. Veronica Roth has written two other books for this series, titled Insurgent and Allegiant. The theme of this book is even through the toughest of times, love and family are the most important things.

Veronica Anne Roth is an American novelist known best for her works Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant, all of which are part of a trilogy. She is 25 years old and residing in Chicago, where her books are set.

Divergent is most closely comparable to The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. They both have the basic setting of a future, dystopian America. The main difference in setting is Divergent takes place in a former Chicago and The Hunger Games takes place in a former United States, taking up the majority of the land. Both novels are set on a very similar premise; society is in shambles, the government is tyrannical and hiding of many secrets, nobody knows anything outside of their land, and two teenagers fall in love with each other through the tough times.

The main characters in Divergent are Beatrice Prior and Tobias Eaton. Beatrice, also known as Tris, is a girl who betrays her family and leaves her old life by switching factions. There are five factions. The factions are Amity, Dauntless, Abnegation, Candor and Erudite. The factions are each responsible for a unique roll needed to sustain society. Tris was born and raised in Abnegation, which is the faction known for selflessness and kindness. When the day came to choose her faction, she chose Dauntless which is known for fearlessness and lack of caring. Little did she know that this decision would change her life and family forever.

Tobias, also known as Four, is a Dauntless instructor, for faction transfers like Tris. While Four was instructing Tris on how to become a Dauntless, they fell deeply in love with each other. The relationship between Tobias and Tris is one with many twists and turns with good times and bad ones.

Divergent is a strong example of the modern teenage love story. Divergent is well written, perfectly worded, and overall a great book. If I were to rate this book out of ten, it would receive at least a nine. While reading this book, I experienced a wide range of emotions from sympathy to anger and was glued to the pages from cover to cover. I strongly recommend this book to any young adult or teenager looking for an entertaining read.
