The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a well constructed children's book with a simple but fun

story line matched with colourful illustrations that add a further element of engagement to the

book. The author Eric Carle does a great job of drawing the reader in, and bringing them along

for the ride throughout his story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by using both his story telling

and illustrative abilities. On top of a great entertaining story for children, the book includes an

educational component by focusing on the days of the week and a butterfly’s metamorphosis.

In the beginning of the book, readers are introduced to an egg which will soon hatch the

story's main character. The caterpillar enters the world on Sunday, and he begins his adventure

by eating his way through an assortment of different fruits. What starts out as a small fruit feast

for the caterpillar quickly turns into an all out overindulgence by Saturday when the caterpillar

consumes; chocolate cake, ice cream, a pickle, Swiss cheese, salami, a lollipop, cherry pie,

sausage, a cupcake, and a watermelon. After all this eating, it comes as no surprise that the

caterpillar develops quite the painful stomach ache. The caterpillar’s journey is coming to an end

when he builds himself a cozy cocoon in which he remains for the span of the next two weeks. In

the climax of the story, the once over weight caterpillar blossoms out of his cocoon as a beautiful

butterfly.



The book’s author Eric Carle has become well know on a global scale for his classic

children's book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, originally published on June, 3rd

translated in over 51 languages worldwide. Its repetitive pattern brings a tremendous

amount of appeal to the table, while still providing educational purpose. The book is sure to

provide extensive entertainment for children between the ages of two to six years of age.

Undoubtedly a story that children will want to hear time and time again along with its beautiful

illustrations, The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a staple item in any children's book collection.
