Amanda Hocking, in her young adult book Wake Gemma takes on a new dramatic life as three girls come into town and young men start disappearing. Gemma Fisher was a typical sixteen year old swimmer racking up her time records in the pool till she made her best times yet, but she had to hold back. One night, after many days of asking, the three girls: Pen, Lexi, and Thea had “sung” to Gemma as she took her nightly swim. After spending nearly the night through afternoon her older sister, Harper, had started to get worried and went after to look for her. Gemma was found by a rocky point in the bay where she normally swims, covered with cuts, bruises and no memory of what the girls had done to her the night before. Now Gemma has a complete hunger for more than lust with her new boyfriend, Alex. She’s scared and terrified till she makes the ultimate choice of leaving it all behind.

In this story, Gemma is dealing with a complicated teenage life that needs to be balanced just right so she isn’t stressed out. I can relate to her normal life situation because I have to balance out sports (like her and swim) with my academics.

The book, Wake, was very relatable and had high intensity actions in appropriate sections of the story which made me want to give 5 stars, in my opinion. My favorite part in the book was finding out she was a siren. The cover of the book tells a hint to her species, but i did not expect her to be turned into a man eating siren like the other three girls. My least favorite part about the book is how it is in the point of view of third person. It switches the characters a bit much and without warning which confuses me here and there. I believe it would have a deeper impact if the story was told in the main character’s, Gemma, view.

I would most definately recommend this book to someone. This book is great for those into greek mythology and romance. This book i believe would fall into the Young Adult genre which makes it perfect for teenage minds.
