The Fault in Our Stars

The Fault in Our Stars, published in 2012, is a book written by John Green that takes the reader through a story of two terminally ill teenagers that develop a quixotic relationship despite having cancer. The two sickly teens named Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters meet in a support group for patients battling similar ailments. Although Hazel is a private yet intellectual character, her immediate attraction to the optimistic one-legged Augustus is unavoidable and sparks a connection. As their relationship develops, Augustus’ love for Hazel becomes apparent when he uses his “wish” to take her to Amsterdam, Germany to meet her favorite author. Upon their return from the intimate trip, Hazel’s condition worsens landing her in the ICU. Remarkably, Hazel makes a temporary recovery; however, Augustus is not as fortunate since the trip leads to the tragic and unexpected discovery of his cancer relapse.

John Green, a raconteur, has undoubtedly created a heart-wrenching piece of literature that demonstrates how much the bond between two people can truly power through most devastating situations. The unorthodox love story is a great read that surpasses the typical meaning of teen romance novels by illustrating many twists along the way. Readers have found the characters very relatable in the sense that Hazel Grace and Augustus felt many of the same emotions that the readers may be currently experiencing. The Fault in Our Stars has captivated the young minds of those who read and undeniably fallen in love with the scintillating book.

The Fault in Our Stars is a book that people of all ages may be able to appreciate due to the fact that the characters are riveting and their journeys and relationship are entertaining. My experiences as an avid reader has allowed me to identify a well written novel that will not disappoint anyone looking for a cathartic story.
