Many Young Adult novels lead readers into crazy, action-filled, unrealistic worlds, seeing that young adults really enjoy reading crazy, action-filled, unrealistic books. But one author, John Green, has went into uncharted lands, writing not just realistic stories, but also relatable stories. He does this in a brilliant fashion, and this great style of writing was displayed when he tackled a modern debate, homosexuality, in his book Will Grayson, Will Grayson.
Will Grayson, Will Grayson follows the lives of two individuals named, as the title suggests, Will Grayson. The first Will Grayson introduced is what can be described as the typical High Schooler: young, funny, non-attentive in his classes, and slim. He has a nice amount of friends in school, but two friends specifically are special to him, Jane and Tiny. Two things about Tiny catch the eye of the reader instantly: Tiny happens to an extremely large man, which contradicts his nickname, and Tiny is gay. Jane, Will’s other special friend, is an attractive girl with whom he is like-minded and shares the same sense of humor. He has a thing for Jane, but he tries to keep from saying it out loud. He is a smart man indeed, and is able to analyze the world around him exceptionally quickly.
The other Will Grayson ( nicknamed O.W.G by the initial Will Grayson) is an interesting character, often keeping to himself and talking to others as little as possible. The thing that sets O.W.G apart from most other High School boys is that this Will is gay. And another interesting thing about this Will is that, although I said he doesn't often talk to people, he spends nearly his entire day after school IMing another homosexual guy named Isaac. And when he is not talking to Isaac, he is thinking about Isaac. O.W.G’s life completely revolves around his love named Isaac.
That is until both Will Graysons meet each other. After the initial Will Grayson is ditched by both Tiny and Jane for a party and O.W.G goes out to meet Isaac in person, both meet in a porn shop. It is around 40 minutes after that O.W.G finds that Isaac was a fake character created by his closest friend Maura to figure out if he was gay. It is at that moment that both Will Graysons meet and, even though they are both very dissimilar, their lives begin to intertwine in crazy, unexpected ways.
Will Grayson, Will Grayson is easily a game-changing book, not only capturing the full attention of the person reading it, but also tackling the now political issue of gay rights without losing the interest of the reader. The lives of both Will Graysons are deeply followed and, even though the characters do not interact too often, one builds a love for both of them in their own unique ways and wants them both to win in the long adventure of life. John Green and David Levithan not only manage to venture into unknown lands, but they have also managed to succeed in building a lasting foundation within those lands.
