Book Review/Summary: Paranormalcy

This book is as paranormal as it gets. Following the story of Evelyn, an agent working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, the story is all about the paranormal activities happening around the whole world. Vampires, Werewolves, Faeries, Hags and many other fantastical characters make an appearance in the book. Along with all of the already-weird paranormals, a teenage shape-shifter breaks into (IPCA) the containment center and searches for clues as to what the feared prophecy is. Evie (Evelyn) finds him because how much ever the paranormals hide their real appearance underneath their glamours, Evie can see through the glamours and identify the paranormal according to their real skin. Vampires live for a long time so even though they may look attractive on the outside, Evie sees their repulsive dried-up bones and corpse-like bodies underneath. Werewolves have yellow eyes to distinguish them from the crowds and they are harmless until full-moon. Faeries wear glamours to look normal on earth, because no one ever forgets a faerie face and faeries can be recognised by their too-perfect-and-beautiful-to-be-human-face. So, Evie helps find these paranormals that roam freely and track them so that they don’t cause trouble for the human race. After finding the shape-shifter(Lend;as in lend me your body) she finds a companion in him. This make up the love-story line of the book. Meanwhile, Reth; Evie’s ex-boyfriend and faerie; is trying to make Evie fall for him again. This isn’t because of the connection he feels between them. Faeries are the most difficult creatures to manipulate and they always find ways around their curse of obeying a named-command. Reth has heard about the faerie prophecy (which Lend had been searching for) and is trying to fill Evie with liquid fire. Yes! liquid fire. Evie is the empty one who doesn’t have a soul. But she can suck other souls and make herself powerful. All the paranormals have been dying because of another person like Evie and she is collecting all of the paranormal’s souls. She is called Vivian. Vivian and Evelyn were both made by faeries and they were meant to find each other and work together to kill all the paranormals for their power. The souls come in the form of liquid fire. The night when Vivian breaks in to the Center, Evie escapes with Lend and Reth. They go to Lend’s house and Reth goes away with the promise of returning and taking Evie away for once and for all. Evie finds out that Lend has a family and that his parents are Human and water spirit. Lend also reveals more secrets about his father owning another center of paranormals which was like IPCA but most free. He founded the organization of helping paranormals because of his own paranormal son. Lend tells his father about how Evie saved his life while escaping and Evie got accepted into the home. Lend and Evie keep growing closer and simultaneously, the threat of all paranormals dying increases. The showdown happens when Lend and Evie go to the Prom and they find out that Vivian has found out where they were. In the end, Evie sucks out all of the liquid fire(souls) out of Vivian and releases them. All the souls go free, Vivan dies and the threat to the Paranormals stops.
