Introduction
The story, “The Red Pony”, by John Steinbeck is about a kid named Jody and his family. His family is the Tiflin’s. Carl Tiflin is the father, Ruth Tiflin is the mother, and Billy Buck helps take care of the house and barn. The Tiflin’s live in California in the early 1930’s.
Description and summary of content
In the beginning of the story, Jody gets his first pony. He made it his priority to take care of it and love it unconditionally. Every day before and after school, Jody would take care of his horse. Throughout the story, Jody continues to take care of any horse that he has. After Billy Buck tried to take care of the first pony, because the pony died, Billy Buck promised Jody another pony. After about a year, the family’s mare has a pony. The mare had a breached birth. Since Billy promised Jody a pony, he had to get it the hard way. The hard way was by killing the mare, and retrieved the pony.

My overall impression of this story is that it is interesting. This story is easy to understand, and very well written. There is only one main conflict in this story. The conflict is death, meaning that there is a lot of death in this story. Animals die, people die, etc…

This is a classic American story. John Steinbeck has written a fantastic story. I give this story 4 star out of 5. I picked 4 stars because this story is exciting and is easy to read. I highly recommend people reading this book.
