The Hunger Games: Five Out of Five Stars


The book Hunger Games was written by Suzanne Collins. She has written many children’s books, and shows. But not this time! She came to the idea of the book when thinking about “Alice in Wonderland.” She was struck by how “pastoral” the setting must be to children.


The Hunger Games is a fantasy story written for young adults. It takes place in a futuristic era. The main character of the story is Katniss Everdeen. She is part of a poor family that lives in district 11, the seam. Katniss is a very strong, independent girl. Her father was killed in a mining accident when she was 11. This caused her mother to fall into a deep depression. So Katniss was forced to take care of, not only her little sister, Prim, but her mother too.

In Panem, where she lives, they have an annual “Hunger Games.” In this, they choose 24 people every year to fight to the death in a large arena. The last one alive wins fame, fortune, and the game. It’s very cruel.

With that being said, the day of the reaping, (the day they choose the contestants) they all go into the middle of town. When they finally chose the contestants, it turned out to be Prim, Katniss’s sister. She couldn’t let her sister be in the games! So, she volunteered herself. The boy that was picked was Peeta Mellark.

During the games, Katniss and Peeta face many challenges, and obstacles. Such as; other players, animals, even insects! It takes talent, bravery, and skill to survive the Hunger Games.
Hunger Games is a very thrilling book. It’s exciting, creative, and entertaining to read. I was very happy with the results of the book. Not only is the book good, it changes the way you think about things! I would recommend the book to anyone! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series now!
