Code Name Verity

By reviewing this book I am taking the challenge to describe the story without giving everything away. This book has so many pieces to the puzzle it is very difficult not to ruin any of the surprises. In saying that, I think all of the twists throughout out the book and the different pieces coming together was what made this book so great. I had a hard time putting this book down. I though Wein did a great job taking the reader out of reality and putting them alongside Verity and Maddie, in the middle of WWII. I had to keep reading to find out if they would make it out of the dangerous situations and escape, alive together. The clarity through the book made it a very easy read. even as the story switches form past to present it is very easy to follow. Having only basic knowledge of WWII before reading this book I did not have a hard time following the story which is placed in the midst of the war. This book will completely take you out of reality and place you in the life of Verity and Maddie. Reading about these ordinary girls and how they grow to do incredible things to save each other and their country makes then true Heroines. Code Name Verity has a fast pace plot which will keep you reading till the end. The reflection of reality is fantastic Wein does a great job keeping a fictional story very realistic. She takes great care in getting the details right and as accurate as possible. As you read the story the images are so vivid, you cannot help but be transported in to the story. It is so easy to picture yourself in the interrogation room with Verity or flying the plane alongside with Maddie. The internal consistency is very well done as the story shifts from present day in the prison to the stories from the past about how Maddie and Verity came to be such close friends. What the reader doesn’t realize until the end how much the story`s will come together and eventually overlap. As the book progresses the reader will realize this more and more which makes this book harder and harder to put down. In the end when both stories come together for and unforgettable ending it will leave the reader turning the book over and starting the book over again. There are so many clues throughout the whole story which seem completely irrelevant till the end which leaves the reader only one choice to go back and start again realizing the clues where there all along. I would strongly recommend reading this book and rereading it. It is such a powerful story about two girls who become best friends while trying to help their country win the war and keep each other safe.
