Characters such as Richard Mayhew, Lady Door, and the marquis de Carabas create an interesting plot that has no equal. The reader finds the main character Richard Mayhew living an average and typical British lifestyle. Richard works a normal cubical job in the bustling city of London. His soon-to-be wife, Jessica, is an incredibly driven woman who tries to assert her mind set on her fiance. Ricard never seems to be very outgoing, or willing to take any sort of risk to achieve greatness. This however, will all change very quickly for Mr. Mayhew. The protagonist finds a girl laying on the sidewalk who is covered in blood and obviously in need of medical attention. Instead of calling a for an ambulance Richard bravely takes her to his apartment upon the woman’s request. From that moment the life Richard Mayhew once knew will forever be very far away. Richard slips between the cracks of life and discovers a world he never knew existed.

London Below is full with all sorts of creatures that arise from ancient history and tales of legend. Angles, demons, vampires, and immortals are only a few of the many beings that are introduced in Gaiman’s novel. Unlike traditional mystical creatures, Gaiman’s characters take on a more realistic and organized approach. Each has a motive that relates to the overall plot, in which their powers that they posses become utterly important. People in London Below have powers that are unique to their families or species. Some are able to communicate with animals. Some can open any door that they touch, even if it opens to somewhere else in the world.
