The Morpheus Road: The Light
Knowing that in one week death can come close but overcoming it is surprising. Marshall and Cooper have been best friends forever until one night when Cooper disappears and Marsh and Sydney are being haunted by Marsh’s own creation, Gravedigger. Morpheus Road: The Light, written by D.J. MacHale is a fascinating choice because it has brave characters, a suspenseful plot and an interesting theme.
First of all, the characters, who were afraid, overcome many fearful conflicts that some how get out to your world but end up as an illusion throughout the story. Marsh is a loner kid with one friend, Coop. Coop and his family has to go to their lake house for the whole summer because Coop has been in Trouble Town, again. That leaves Marsh alone in his house because his dad also left for the week for work. That week is what started the haunting of Marsh from his own drawings. “That meant I had to go back to my house. Alone.” (106) Marsh doesn’t want to go home because he knows after what Gravedigger did to him, which was make an illusion of him at Christmas but then it shattered and Gravedigger almost got to Marsh. It was surprising to see Marsh go back but then to find out that there was nothing wrong with the house. “My confusion was instantly replaced with worry. The more who knows the more will be in danger.” (241). Marsh’s creation is going to the extremes to kill Marsh by getting to other people and making them do crazy things. This is how the characters are brave.
Secondly, the suspense builds throughout the plot. “Looking to my right, I saw exactly what I had feared. Reilly had heard us power up and was coming around to chase us.” (261-262) Marsh and Sydney are close to finding the truth about Coop. Gravedigger is making a guy on a boat run them over on a boat so they can go down and take the Morpheus Road. “I had nowhere to go. I think he enjoyed watching his prey sweat.”(324). within this whole book, Gravedigger ended up also being an illusion. Damon, the one who really wants to get Marsh, is telling him to get the poleax. This is the reason the plot is suspenseful.
Everything is not always as it seems is the theme to my story. “Answer me”, Damon growled “Do you live in the Light? Or die in the Black?”(326) Marsh doesn’t know what to do except for the fact that he wants to live but he doesn’t want Damon hurting the people he knows if he doesn’t help Damon. “He may have been dead, but he was still Coop.”(334). After everything that has happened to Marsh and Coop, they still got each others backs.
In conclusion, Morpheus Road: the Light by D.J. MacHale shows how it is to be a brave character, suspenseful plot and a theme of everything is not always as it seems. This will leave readers at the edge of their seats because it may seem obvious what is going to happen next until you turn the page and find out that this isn’t what you expected to happen.
