Ever wonder who, or what, you are? The answer is simpler than you might think. To hear it from a scientist’s perspective, we are all just strands of DNA, the different combinations of which deciding almost everything about us. However, for most this knowledge is not enough. This question haunts 18 year old Eli Samuels as he begins to find out more about his family’s past, and how that past relates to his new boss and world renowned scientist Quincy Wyatt in the book Double Helix by Nancy Werlin. After graduating high school, Eli (through an embarrassing email) gets a job at Wyatt Transgenics under his icon, Quincy Wyatt. Although Eli is working at his dream job, he can’t get over the fact that things just don’t feel right. Weirder yet, his father is furious about Eli’s new job and seems to have some sort of grudge against Dr. Wyatt. When Eli begins to find out the meaning behind his father’s dislike of Wyatt, he learns much more than what he bargained for. In this Novel, Werlin explores not only the intricacies of teenage life and the ethics of genetic research, but also attempts to answer the question of what we are as humans, and where our limits are. This interesting novel should have young adults everywhere interested in the storyline all the way to the end.
