As I begin to progress in my reading of Jennifer Government, I can begin making connections of the corrupt society to the real world we live in today. Jennifer Government is set in a dystopian alternate reality in which a United States global government is controlled by corporate entities. The novel focuses on the people working for companies to maintain the capitalist system of the society. Although today, we don’t see companies controlling our government but, we do see big companies effecting peoples influence on politics. For example, tech giants like Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple are putting millions of dollars each year into political influence. Resent surveys by political scientist at Sandford University have found that the political learnings of tech leaders could help push lawmakers to the left or right on many social and economic issues such as, health care, immigration, taxes, etc. Aside from lawmakers, social companies and their media can affect an individual’s vote on politics just from what they see online. This shows that technology companies that hold power can effect viewers by what they advertise on social media.
